How to...install a fire surround
NB/ Never attempt to install a gas fire yourself, always employ the services of a registered expert. Electric fires can be installed yourself but you should get old fires checked out by an electrician.
1. Prepare the room
Clear the area around the fireplace/chimney and cover any existing furniture to prevent them getting covered with dust or soot.
2. Remove the old fireplace
Be extremely careful when removing an old fireplace as they can be very heavy, ideally you should have someone on hand to help you with the surround to prevent injury.
When removing the old surround check how it is attached to the wall. If it is attached by metal rods that are buried within the wall then chip away at the plaster around the metal using a chisel and hammer to remove the metal screws. If the surround is wooden it will most likely be attached with wooden battens, again find the screws and unscrew the surround. For brickwork surrounds, start at the top and chip away at the motor to remove the bricks one by one.
3. Remove the hearth
Use a crowbar to break the hearth away from the wall, leave the concrete/plaster as it is behind the plaster unless it is very damaged in which case smooth with fresh concrete.
4. Install the new hearth
Lay the new hearth in front of the fire opening and use a spirit level to check it is straight. Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions and spread onto the hearth and push against the wall the secure.
5. Install the new surround
Place the new surround centrally on the hearth so it fits neatly around the fire opening and screw to the wall with the supplied fixings.
6. Install the mantelpiece
Some mantelpieces will come in pieces which will need to be assembled. Then lift the assembled mantelpiece onto the hearth, fit around the surround and screw to the wall to secure.
