How to...grout tiles
Tools for the job
Grout Sponge Scraper Cloth Squeegee & plastic Spreader Waterproof adhesive
1. Clean the area
Before you start, clear the area around the tiles you need to grout and cover any surfaces directly underneath the tiles to prevent any damage from spillages.
If you are replacing old grouting it is best to rake out the dirty grout with a grout remover first. Powered grout removers are available from hire shops or larger DIY stores to make the job easier.
2. Spread the grout
Apply the grout to the tile and spread it over the tile surface with a squeegee or a plastic grout spreader. Push the grout into gaps by working diagonally across the tiles. Work on a small area at a time to prevent the grout drying onto the tiles.
3. Fill the gaps
While the grout is still damp work into the gaps between the tiles and wipe off any excess grout from the tile.
4. Seal the tiles
Once you have finished grouting your tiled area you need to seal the joints at the bottom to make the surface waterproof. Run a strip of waterproof sealant between the new tiles and the worktop, bath or sink once the tiles are dry.
